But I haven't shot my blk except for the video above since I built the 9x39. Which is another reason why I think it's better at suppression too.Īnyway, I know I wrote a wall of text, but there it is in a nutshell.īuy or build a 9x39 or don't. Depending on how you build your gun, but I even use a little less powder per pop in the 9x39 too.

220 gr 308's were often well into the $30 ballpark. Before the panic started, I was getting a box of 50 of the soft cor bullets for a little under $20. And it's not a cheap caliber to get started handloading for. If you listen closely you can even hear them smacking into the backstop and the tone is better too. And both calibers were loaded as near the same velocity as possible too. So, this is essentially the most honest and fair comparison that I could make. And the next group of shots were fired with an integrally suppressed 9x39 upper with my pet loads. The first few shots is with an integrally suppressed 300 blk with my pet loads. Here is the best comparison video that I could make.

I respect that a lot.Īnd I guess finally, for those that wonder how it sounds suppressed. The mags worked well with the factory bullets in the first place, so I'm thankful that DH is trying to make them work with nearly everything. They weren't working really great with the soft point ammo (handloads), so they're working on an improved version for the next batch that hopefully will work better for handloaders. As you can see, the hot cor bullet has awesome expansion even at subsonic velocities.ĭ&H mag has released the 20 round mags, though expensive. And the bullet on the right was a 270 gr speer hot cor bullet fired at the same velocity as the blk bullets were. The one in the middle is typical tip deformation of what subsonic blk often does. There is hardly any evidence it had even been fired. Since only seeing what they look like sitting on a table only tells some of the story, here are a few bullets that I recovered from the backstop. I have shown these pictures before, but here they are again for reference.Ģ20 gr nosler 308 (blk) on left. But, like I said, for those that like to crunch numbers, the 9x39 is really good for what it is. I don't say that to take away from 45acp because I love the 45acp.

The 9x39 using a 286 gr bullet at 1050 fps has 697 ft lbs of energy.įor even another comparison, a 45acp using a 230 gr bullet traveling 900 fps only has 413 ft lbs on target. I haven't seen any of the 125 or 140 gr bullets being offered in a while unfortunately, but I still have some that I put back for whitetail and black bear hunting.Īs for subsonics, they still kick 300 blk rump.įor those that like to look at numbers, 300 blk using a run of the mill 220 gr bullet traveling 1050 fps has 538 ft lbs of energy on target. Ranging from 90 or 95 gr bullets, 125 gr copper bullets (copper is lighter than lead) and even 140 gr solid copper bullets. There have been some lightweight bullets tested in the 9x39 from a few handloaders for supersonics. So, for those who think the 9x39 is just a russian knockoff of the blk, you would be wrong. The Russians had a straight forward better approach. It's not like blk where you have to buy a chop saw and a jig to cut the brass and then resize it and decrimp it and trim it. Even after shooting, you don't even have to trim the brass. Some fire form them first, but you don't even have to do that. You use standard 7.62x39 brass and resize them. Some have foolishly compared the 9x39 to the 300blk. Which is why I bought a set of Redding Dies from KAK when I bought the bolt and barrel and load my own.Īs has been mentioned, it's generally no problem using 9.3mm mauser bullets. Import only ammo scares most people away.

I've been shooting the 9x39 for about 2 years now. Quoted:Ok, I'd like to take a few minutes to write a wall of text.
